Bepensa continues its commitment to environmental conservation through strategic alliances, implementing actions for proper waste disposal, and promoting a culture of natural resource conservation.
Bepensa, through the Bepensa Foundation, in partnership with Fishing Shipowners, the City Council of Progreso, and Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatán, has initiated actions to promote sustainable fishing habits, which will benefit nearly 5,000 fishermen in this municipality.
This project will develop actions that support the comprehensive conservation of the marine and coastal environment through training and the proper disposal of plastic waste in the fishing fleet at the port of Progreso, Yucatán.
This will be achieved through the implementation of the Bepensa Foundation's ReQPET program, which will provide containers so fishing boats can return and recover the plastic waste they generate during their fishing trips. Upon arrival, the containers can be collected in transport units and sent to a recycling plant. This will help reduce the amount of waste entering our seas and oceans.
This ongoing initiative will be accompanied, in its first year, by training for fishing fleet crews, through which they will be taught the importance of caring for, conserving, and sustainably utilizing the coast and wetlands, which are their source of work and livelihood. In addition, graphic materials will be installed in various areas to improve environmental stewardship.
This initiative, in collaboration with Fishing Shipowners and Pronatura, is invaluable because it creates alliances between the private sector, associations, and the government to work shoulder to shoulder in a commitment to environmental conservation. It also raises awareness and fosters a culture of the importance of protecting natural resources.
Present at the signing of the agreement to launch this program at Progreso City Hall were Mr. Fernando Ponce Díaz, President of the Bepensa Foundation; Mr. Julián Zacarías Curi, Mayor of Progreso; Mr. Rafael Combaluzier Medina, Secretary of Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture for the Government of the State of Yucatán; Mr. Ricardo Ponce Gutiérrez, President of the Board of Directors of Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatán AC; Mr. José Manuel Sánchez González, General Director of Fishing Shipowners; and Mr. Luis Carrillo Galaz, President of the Federation of Central-Western Cooperatives of the State of Yucatán.
Bepensa, the Bepensa Foundation, and their partners reaffirm their commitment to contributing to the conservation and preservation of nature and coastal habitats, which contribute to the well-being of communities and the global environment for future generations.
