The growth of cities, different lifestyles, and new consumer habits are some of the reasons that have led the world to a new reality in waste management. Aware of this, at Bepensa and as part of the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry (IMCC), we are committed to achieving a "World Without Waste," seeking a planet where everything is recycled or reused. This year, we continue this commitment to continue working on both recovery and on the culture and awareness surrounding our waste management habits, so that the amount of recycled material in our products increases.
Part of these actions was our participation in the 2019 Environmental Expo Forum organized by the Yucatán State Secretariat of Sustainable Development and CANACO. In addition to being sponsors, we also had a booth where people could learn about everything Bepensa is doing for environmental conservation and recycling, as explained by Engineer Jaime Cámara, General Manager of PETSTAR, our largest food-grade PET recycling plant in the world. Today, we are the leading recycler of food-grade PET in the country, collecting 35% of all recovered PET in Mexico. Currently, almost 60% of this material is recovered in the country.
In addition, that same day in Quintana Roo, Bepensa, together with ECOCE, signed an agreement with ECO-V for the protection and preservation of Holbox. This agreement seeks to prevent air, water, and soil pollution caused by the inadequate disposal of urban solid waste, while also promoting environmental education through the promotion of an ecological culture of shared responsibility between government, industry, and society. We were joined in this signing by the Secretary of the Environment (SEMA), Biol. Alfredo Arellano Guillermo; the Mayor of Lázaro Cárdenas, Quintana Roo, José Nivardo Mena Villanueva; representatives of CONANP (National Commission of Agricultural Research and Development), the hotel association, among others. This is how we reaffirm our commitment to environmental conservation by removing recyclable waste from the island and ensuring compliance with the requirements outlined in applicable regulations and requests for the collection of plastic waste such as PET, for the benefit of the residents and visitors of Holbox.
Also in the framework of World Recycling Day, in the state of Campeche, we accompanied the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Tourism, the Calkiní Environmental Directorate, and the Environmental Directorate of the Campeche Comprehensive Port Authority to celebrate the success of three mega cleanups on Isla Arena and the collection of 46 tons of waste. This event also included the establishment of an Interinstitutional Working Group for the Isla Arena Limpia program, of which we are a part. In addition, the draft of the new Waste Management Regulations for the Municipality of Calkiní was presented at this event, and SEMARNATCAM (Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources) delivered the Solid Waste Transfer and Recovery Site project for the Isla Arena community. All of this was accompanied by a reforestation campaign with 45 palm trees planted along the Isla Arena boardwalk.
Our commitment and participation in these actions is to continue contributing responsibly to immediate, comprehensive actions to curb environmental damage. This task is shared by the government, businesses, and society. Each person's contribution to environmental preservation and sustainability will be to the extent that they do their part.
