Amid the deepest economic recession in decades, Mexican companies are struggling to grow and avoid falling into the ever-growing group of loss-making companies.
The "500 Most Important Companies in Mexico" is a ranking published by Expansión magazine that considers for-profit companies, entities that offer goods or services and report revenue or sales. The ranking's objective is to provide an overview of the leading Mexican companies in various economic sectors. More than 2,500 companies, public and private, Mexican and transnational, were invited to submit applications through an open call requesting general information and summarized financial data, which are included in the list.
Companies are ranked by net income, from highest to lowest, which determines their ranking. For Mexican companies, operations in Mexico and abroad are considered, while for transnational companies, only the income generated by their domestic operations.
The companies that saw the least sales growth were those in the chemical and petrochemical sectors, automotive manufacturers, and steel and metallurgy. Companies with double-digit growth were concentrated in the financial services, insurance and surety, auto parts, logistics, and transportation sectors. Information technology and digital commerce have also held up strongly, and these segments have been key during the contingency.
