How to recycle PET correctly

At Bepensa, the way we recycle is called the circular economy, because once we recover a container, regardless of the brand, we recycle it and turn it into another container that can be recycled again, thus creating a continuous cycle forever.

Which means we no longer use new plastic. But for the Petstar plant—the largest in Latin America, located in Mexico and part of the Coca-Cola Mexican Industry—to properly recycle PET waste, it is necessary to follow some basic rules that optimize this process for its full potential.

1. Empty the container but do not wash it with water or detergent, as the process identifies normal product residues and cleans them properly. Introducing other substances, especially inorganic ones, can affect the quality of the recovered PET.

2. Flatten the bottle so that it is flat, not crooked as it has become customary, as this way it can be stacked and accumulated efficiently to save space.

3. Close the bottle. It's important to replace the cap once it's flattened to create a vacuum that optimizes its transport in bales. The label should also be kept on the container, as both it and the cap are recycled in subsequent processes to make more labels and screw caps.

4. Deposit them at the ReQPet container collection points. This way, they'll more easily reach the collection centers and then the PetStar recycling plant, which will ensure each item returns to the cycle to produce new containers with 100% recycled material.

At Bepensa, we are proud to contribute to environmental conservation with effective processes that position Mexico as one of the most efficient countries in waste recycling, surpassing powerhouses such as Canada, the United States, and Brazil.

With your support, we continue working for a waste-free Mexico. Join this movement!
