Let's take care of our Mother Earth together

Did you know that…?

-Every year, the world loses 10 million hectares of forest—an area similar to the area of Iceland.

-Healthy ecosystems help protect us from disease because species diversity makes it more difficult for pathogens to spread.

-Around one million animal and plant species are in danger of extinction

Mother Earth is clearly calling us to act. The oceans are filling with plastic and becoming more acidic. Extreme heat, wildfires, floods, and other climate events have affected millions of people. Even today, we are facing COVID-19, a global health pandemic with a strong relationship to the health of our ecosystem.

Climate change and human-induced changes in nature disrupt biodiversity; deforestation, land-use change, intensive agricultural and livestock production, and the growing illegal wildlife trade can accelerate the pace of the planet's destruction.

This Earth Day is the first to be celebrated within the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The health of our planet and its inhabitants directly depends on the health of our ecosystems. Restoring damaged ecosystems will help end poverty, combat climate change, and prevent mass extinction. But we will only achieve this if everyone does their part.

At Bepensa, through the Bepensa Foundation, we carry out various programs that contribute to achieving this goal. At BioParque Bepensa, more than 7,000 trees are planted each year, with a 10,000-square-meter demonstration area where we promote the conservation of endemic species. Similarly, ReQPET is our ongoing PET waste recovery program in the communities where we operate, integrating it into a sustainable circular economy and eliminating it from ecosystems. We also clean and remediate cenotes on the Yucatán Peninsula, returning a source of water to nature, as well as all life that depends on it. The Alacranes program focuses on the conservation and restoration of the coral reef.

Let us remember today more than ever on this International Mother Earth Day that we need a shift toward a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let us promote harmony with nature and the earth. Join the global movement to restore Mother Earth!
