There is no doubt that trees play a central role in maintaining the environmental balance that allows humans to develop and even exist.
Although they are often associated with forests, and indeed, we must preserve and reforest them, it is in cities where they play a crucial role every day, since around 80% of Mexico's population and almost 60% of the world's population live in urban areas.
Trees offer many benefits, whether in the countryside or in the city. One of them is reducing the risk of flooding. During storms, trees help minimize the amount of water that goes into drains, as they absorb some of it and return it to the ground. Furthermore, their roots help keep the soil firm, preventing landslides, especially on hills.
Another is energy conservation. If one or more trees are properly positioned around a house or building, they will help keep it cool during hot weather or contain the cold wind in winter, reducing energy consumption. They also absorb polluting gases and particles, as well as noise. Trees in parks and sidewalks also provide fruit or food for birds and other wildlife. And if that weren't enough, in urban areas they increase property values and mitigate the heat generated by pavement, as even endorsed by the United Nations (UN).
For all these reasons and much more, since 2008, the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry (IMCC) has been implementing actions to preserve trees in both urban and rural areas through the National Reforestation and Water Harvesting Program. For example:
– More than 70 million trees planted.
– 63,990 hectares reforested.
– Maintenance of 67,077 hectares.
– Presence in 90 Protected Natural Areas (PNA).
– Participation of more than 320,000 people from 1,258 communities.
And you, what are you doing to care for these lungs of the Earth that provide so many benefits to the environment?
