Recycling is much more than separating packaging; it involves understanding how the recycling chain works and what actions truly contribute to a circular economy, in which waste is transformed into new resources. Based on this vision, we share five everyday practices you can follow to boost the recycling chain and a sustainable circular economy:
• Dispose of all packaging separately. If waste isn't properly separated at home, many recyclable materials lose their value or become contaminated. Proper separation is the first essential step for the entire system to work.
• Avoid treating all plastics as equal. Not all plastics have the same value or are recycled in the same way. Identifying the number within the recycling triangle helps you know which ones to separate. For example, PET (#1) is widely recycled in plants like PetStar, the world's largest food-grade PET recycling plant, of which Bepensa is a shareholder.
• Let go of the idea that recycling doesn't make a difference. Recycling does transform. It reduces waste, protects natural resources, and creates jobs. It's a collective effort in which every person counts.
• Know that reusing is not synonymous with recycling. Reusing extends the useful life of an object without transforming it, while recycling converts it into raw material for new products. Both are valuable, but they serve different functions.
• Believe in individual actions because they do have an impact. Separating, emptying, crushing, and capping containers greatly facilitates the recycling process. In the case of PET, there's no need to wash the containers or remove the labels: specialized plants handle the proper processing.
At Bepensa, we are committed to promoting a culture of conscious and effective recycling. Through our partnerships, initiatives, and infrastructure, such as PetStar, the world's largest food-grade PET recycling plant, we work to ensure that every container has the opportunity for a new life, benefiting the planet and future generations.
Recycling properly does make a difference. And it starts with what each person does at home.
