With the goal of promoting professional development through the implementation of sustainable projects, the Bepensa Foundation launched the "Ideas Boosted" program on January 14th. This program is aimed at students from educational institutions who wish to submit completely original proposals and form a team.
The "Recycling Dunes" project, presented by four members from the UNAM Sisal campus, was the winner of the call for university projects. The project seeks to promote the conservation of coastal vegetation by reforesting and regenerating the impacted dune in the town of Sisal, Hunucmá, with an emphasis on the conscious use of PET containers as tools that contribute to environmental restoration.
The specific objectives of this project are:
Restore the environmental functions provided by coastal dunes by restoring 4,500 m2 of coastal dunes in Sisal.
Increase the total coastal dune vegetation in Sisal by approximately 10%.
Increase the number of native and/or endemic plant species in the region's coastal dunes.
Support the conservation of animal species linked to the coastal dune.
Return the scenic value provided by the coastal dune to the beach.
Promote a recycling culture by using PET bottles in the construction, protection, germination, and planting of vegetation on the dune.
Contribute to raising environmental awareness among the population for the conservation of the coastal ecosystem with the help of infographics, posters, videos, and workshops.
Promote environmental education with talks and workshops.
The project, which has an investment of 189 thousand pesos, will directly benefit the 2,000 people who live in Sisal, Yucatán.
The four members of the winning team are in the sixth semester of the Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Coastal Zone Management:
