Impact of cenote sanitation on communities

In our work cleaning cenotes, the actions carried out by Bepensa volunteers are intended to leave a legacy of social responsibility for future generations.

As part of the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry for a World Without Waste, Bepensa, through the Bepensa Foundation, carries out the sanitation of cenotes in different communities on the Yucatán Peninsula, in coordination with local and state authorities to make each of these actions a significant undertaking that positively impacts the communities where we operate.

The Bepensa Foundation implemented a three-phase action plan: awareness, cleanup, and community engagement.

The activity begins with an awareness-raising talk for the population, supported by local authorities. Expert cave divers and volunteers then meet at the cenote to clean it, which takes four to six hours. The waste is then sorted and weighed for recycling. Finally, a social and integration activity is held with the community, which includes the exchange of experiences and points of view.

In this way, different aspects of the legacy of well-being and social responsibility that we hope to leave for future generations of these communities are being addressed:

Water quality: In partnership with the Ministry of Sustainable Development, we are joining the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals to improve water quality. Through the restoration of cenotes, more than 330,000 liters of water have been recovered.

· Education and awareness: We work closely with community members to create an environmental culture that permeates both adults and children, ensuring proper follow-up with the commitment of local authorities, with the goal of ensuring that these bodies of water remain clean once they are cleaned.

Infrastructure: Cenotes are extremely attractive natural phenomena for tourism, so once cleaned up, they have great potential for year-round visits. This creates a social and economic impact, as it promotes job creation and the growth of communities toward self-sustainability.

All of this is done with the ultimate goal of leaving a legacy of Social Responsibility for future generations, creating positive impacts that last over time.
