Promotion of meliponiculture in the Mayan region

The Intercultural Mayan University of Quintana Roo and the Bepensa Foundation presented the initial results of the first conservation, rescue, teaching, and innovation center for the development of Mayan meliponiculture in the municipality of José María Morelos, as part of their commitment to social development, the environment, and diversity.

The objective of this project, according to its promoters, has been the creation of a meliponary, to conserve the native bee Melipona Beecheii “Xunan-Kaab”, as well as to have a place that allows gathering and sharing the available knowledge about the bee, to produce hives that allow the rescue and conservation of the species.

During the event held at the University's School of Health, Bepensa Foundation representative Fernando Ponce expressed his enthusiasm for the project and its results.

He also thanked the Intercultural Mayan University of Quintana Roo for all the support and facilities it provides to students to carry out such an important project for the environment and its diversity.

"We are very pleased to have promoted this project and its results, and extremely grateful to be able to reaffirm and continue our commitment to social responsibility for the well-being of the environment in Mexico," said Fernando Ponce Díaz.

Among the most notable results achieved with this project are the creation of 50 new colonies of melipona bees, as well as 10 educational workshops for children from local primary schools with a total of 238 participants, and nine informational courses for adults interested in meliponiculture from nearby communities with a total of 245 attendees.
