The Sustainable Development Goals agenda puts people and the planet at the center, is grounded in human rights, and is supported by a global partnership committed to helping people overcome poverty, hunger, and disease. It will therefore be built on the foundation of global cooperation and solidarity.
International Human Solidarity Day is:
A day to celebrate our unity in diversity;
A day to remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements;
A day to raise public awareness about the importance of solidarity;
A day to foster debate on ways to promote solidarity to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, including the goal of ending poverty;
A day to take action and seek new initiatives to eradicate poverty.
Solidarity in the work of the United Nations.
Solidarity has defined the work of the United Nations since its inception. From its inception, the Organization has engaged the peoples of the world to promote peace, human rights, and economic and social development. The organization was founded on the basic premise of unity and harmony among its members, expressed in the concept of collective security, which is based on the solidarity of its members to unite "for the maintenance of international peace and security."
Likewise, the Organization is based on this spirit of solidarity for "cooperation in the solution of international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian nature."
Solidarity is one of the fundamental and universal values on which relations among peoples should be based in the 21st century. For this reason, the General Assembly decided to proclaim December 20 of each year as the International Day of Human Solidarity.
Furthermore, with the aim of eradicating poverty and promoting human and social development in the less industrialized countries, particularly among the poorest segments of their populations, the General Assembly created the World Solidarity Fund.
