Among Bepensa's partnerships for environmental conservation and improvement is the GEI México program, a voluntary national program for accounting and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promoting GHG emission reduction projects.
The Program is a public-private partnership coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the Commission for Private Sector Studies for Sustainable Development (CESPEDES) of the Business Coordinating Council, to which Bepensa belongs.
The program has technical support from the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
The program was born from the premise that "what is not measured is not controlled" and initially focused on developing technical capacity for quantifying GHG emissions. By understanding the sources of emissions and estimating GHG emissions, it is possible to identify areas of opportunity to develop projects that improve energy consumption and, consequently, reduce GHG emissions.
Eight years after its launch, the program has proven to be a tool that promotes the voluntary participation of companies like Bepensa in mitigating climate change.
In a new context, with Mexico's General Climate Change Law, the Mexico GHG Program plays a new role. In addition to continuing to develop capacity for GHG emissions inventory development, it now becomes a key instrument for promoting voluntary participation in mitigation, which Bepensa has joined.
In 2011, the Mexico GHG Program launched a new recognition scheme to promote comprehensive GHG emissions management. The program is designed to enable companies like Bepensa to progressively develop a strategy to improve their environmental and climate performance through the following steps:
a) Reporting and publication of the greenhouse gas emissions inventory.
b) Third-party verification of your GHG inventory and establishment of a mitigation program.
c) Improving carbon performance, through verification of GHG emission reductions achieved by implemented mitigation projects, and demonstration of the improvement of carbon performance indicators.
At Bepensa, we are currently working to implement these measures in our processes, so that we can add value to these types of programs that seek to properly conserve the environment.
