The Mexican Coca-Cola Industry (IMCC) and Azteca Foundation They announced the successful closing of the 2021 edition of the Clean Mexico for a #WorldWithoutWaste initiative, which toured the country during October and November of last year to clean and collect waste in public spaces in Quintana Roo, Oaxaca, Baja California Sur, Jalisco, Nayarit, Mexico City, and the State of Mexico.
More than 1,900 volunteers participated in this environmental awareness project, enabling the recovery of 28 tons of waste, mostly non-recyclable, to contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous world.
“We have witnessed the value and power that a single initiative can have by multiplying efforts. From young people to entire families, everyone is working together for a better planet and a World Without Waste. Working hand in hand with companies and authorities, we have managed to promote a change in the recycling culture of thousands of people, and this is just the beginning. As the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry, we will continue working daily to generate real change.”, highlighted Sergio Londoño, Vice President of Public Affairs, Communication and Sustainability of Coca-Cola Mexico.
During the seven days carried out in different locations in the country, which were joined by bottling groups, environmental allies such as ECOCE and various local and state governments, a total of 28 tons of waste were collected. Ninety-four percent was non-recyclable waste such as Styrofoam, plastic utensils, and single-use disposables, and the remainder was materials such as bottles, plastics, glass, cigarette butts, and others.
In the case of PET containers, which represented only 0.55% of the recovered waste, they were transported to the PetStar and IMER recycling plants for proper recycling. The remaining waste was cataloged by ECOCE and processed for proper disposal and treatment by local governments.
This initiative is part of the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry's efforts to achieve the global goal of a World Without Waste, which calls for the recovery and recycling of the equivalent of all its containers sold, in addition to each container being created with at least 50% recycled materials by 2030.
Achieving a better planet is everyone's job. From properly disposing of packaging to promoting a recycling culture for different materials. Bepensa's commitment as part of the International Coalition for the Promotion of Sustainable Development (IMCC) to achieving a #WorldWithoutWaste is firm, and it will continue to multiply its efforts to recover the equivalent of each of its packaging, contributing with actions to the commitments made during COP26, innovating its portfolio, which already includes 31% recycled material, and promoting solutions such as returnable packaging, of which Coca-Cola currently comprises 47% of its brand portfolio.
