The Bepensa Foundation is promoting community cleanup of the mangroves in Dzilam de Bravo.

Dzilam de Bravo, April 2025 – As part of its environmental commitment, the Bepensa Foundation organized a cleanup campaign in the Dzilam de Bravo mangrove swamp, joining forces with volunteers, students, local authorities, and community residents. During the activity, 1,200 kilograms of waste were collected, in an effort to preserve one of the region's most important ecosystems.

Agustín Menéndez Reyes, Corporate Affairs Manager at Bepensa, emphasized that mangroves not only protect coasts and mitigate the effects of climate change, but also represent a vital refuge for marine biodiversity. “They are being lost three to five times faster than forest resources, and this directly affects coastal communities,” he warned.

Menéndez Reyes recalled that it was in 2010 that the Bepensa Foundation launched a program to support community groups of women in the ports of Dzilam Bravo and Sisal, dedicated to collecting and storing recyclable materials as a source of livelihood. To date, efforts like these have led to the creation of 26 collection centers in Yucatán, Quintana Roo, and Campeche, preventing the accumulation of waste on coasts and mangroves and actively contributing to the preservation of these ecosystems.

The event featured participation by Margarita Ponce Díaz, president of the Bepensa Foundation, and representatives from the Ministry of Sustainable Development, as well as municipal authorities and allies from the environmental sector. The event reaffirmed that community collaboration is key to preserving the natural heritage of southeastern Mexico.
