Bepensa Foundation has worked on 71 cenotes in a decade of environmental work.

  • Thanks to the Dunosusa 2025 roundup, the Xpakay cenotes in Tekit and soon Tunich in Cancun were intervened, advancing the preservation of these unique ecosystems of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Mérida, Yucatán, July 2025 – As part of its commitment to environmental conservation, the Bepensa Foundation has managed to intervene in a total of 69 cenotes on the Yucatán Peninsula from 2015 to 2025, recovering more than 32,000 kilos of waste in sustained sanitation and ecological restoration efforts. With this year's interventions, the number of water bodies treated will reach 71.

The Cenotes Program, promoted by the Bepensa Foundation, is carried out in three fundamental phases: community awareness, deep cleaning of the cenote by a team of experts, and, when necessary, reforestation of the surrounding area in collaboration with community volunteers. This action model seeks not only to mitigate the environmental impact but also to generate a positive connection between society and its natural environment.

Cenote cleaning is carried out both underwater and on the surface. Specialized divers manually collect the waste from the cenote, while volunteers, Bepensa Foundation staff, and community residents participate in surface waste collection. The waste is then channeled to its final destination with the support of the local city council. In addition, environmental education activities, tree planting, and community gatherings are held, and a commemorative sign is unveiled recognizing the collective effort and the participation of the donor company.

During the activity, each volunteer receives materials, bags, harvesting tools, hydration, and a distinctive T-shirt and cap. These days represent not only an environmental action, but also an educational and collaborative experience.

In this 2025 edition, thanks to the funds raised through the rounding program with Dunosusa, the “Xpakay” Cenote, located in the municipality of Tekit, Yucatán, was intervened, where a comprehensive cleanup was carried out with the participation of the community, in which 102 kilos of waste were recovered, in the body of water and on the surface.

This is the seventh time the Bepensa Foundation and Dunosusa have partnered through rounding to positively impact the environment. As part of the funds raised, a new cleanup event will be held on September 10th at the Tunich Cenote, located in Region 100 of Cancún, Quintana Roo.

The Bepensa Foundation reaffirms its commitment to protecting water, biodiversity, and communities, promoting sustainable actions.
