On June 21st, with the collaboration of 30 people, the Bepensa Foundation and the Technical Divers Association of Yucatán Dive Center carried out a coastal cleanup in the Alacranes Reef National Park. The task consisted of cleaning the five islands that make up this reef over a three-day period, concluding on June 23rd on Pérez Island. As part of the logistics, participants were divided into teams of three people. Each team included a person who kept a record of the collected trash with the intention of classifying it and identifying the most abundant types of waste.
In the end, more than 800 kg of trash was collected, including plastics, PET, glass, metals, and other items. This effort was carried out thanks to the leadership of the Bepensa Foundation and the Technical Divers Association of the Yucatán Dive Center, with the collaboration of CONANP, the Navy, and the Yucatán Yacht Club.
As part of the complementary activities carried out to keep the Alacranes Reef National Park clean, the aforementioned institutions have launched an online competition called the Alacranes Reef Trash Fishing competition through the website www.arrecifealacranes.com. The rules can be found on the website, and the main objective is to promote a culture of care for the environment, especially the reefs.
