The Las Coloradas community is located on the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula and lies within the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. It has just over a thousand inhabitants dedicated to fishing, the salt industry, and, in the last three years, tourism.
With the goal of contributing to improving the quality of life of the Las Coloradas community and its environment through the development of strategies that reduce the amount of solid waste and its negative effects, there is a partnership between the Bepensa Foundation, the Coca-Cola Foundation, and Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatán.
Two specific objectives were set: I) to identify the current status of solid waste management in the community in all its phases: generation, classification, collection and final disposal, and II) to reduce the amount of solid waste generated in the community.

As a first result, Pronatura P de Y reports having a diagnosis of solid waste generation, its collection, management and final disposal.
There is also a baseline of the potential impact of trash on critical habitats for priority wildlife (sea turtles) in the community.
Another excellent result is that we have gained more community support for actions that reduce waste mismanagement.

With actions like this, the Bepensa Foundation and its partners, the Coca-Cola Foundation and Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatán, are working to create a culture of good waste management and care for coastal wildlife.
