Madrid, Spain; February 4, 2020. PetStar, the world's largest food-grade PET recycling plant, part of the Coca-Cola Mexican Industry, received the Ibero-American Quality Award in the Gold category, the highest level of this award that recognizes excellence and sustainable management of organizations for the quality and innovation of their processes.
The event was chaired by Nadia Calviño, Vice President of the Spanish Government, and the award was presented by Rebeca Grynspan, President of the Ibero-American General Secretariat, in the presence of Antonio Garamendi, President of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE), and Rafael García, President of FUNDIBEQ. This award is based on the Ibero-American Model of Excellence in Management and is open to Ibero-American organizations that have previously won the National Quality Award in their country of origin.
In 2017, PetStar received the National Quality Award granted by former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, and this year it competed in the Ibero-American Quality Award to demonstrate that its Sustainable Business Model is a global example of innovation and quality.
The award was received by Alejandro Molina, Chairman of the Board of PetStar, and Jaime Cámara, CEO of PetStar, who stated that this award demonstrates PetStar's commitment to being a global leader in innovation and quality.
“This recognition clearly demonstrates the commitment of PetStar and its shareholders, led by Arca Continental, Coca-Cola de México, Bepensa Bebidas, Corporación del Fuerte, Corporación Rica, Grupo Embotellador Nayar and Embotelladora de Colima, to sustainability and our vision of being a global example of excellence that drives competitiveness, demonstrating that the PET collection and recycling chain in Mexico is possible and can be carried out with high quality standards through our Sustainable Business Model, which generates social, environmental and economic value,” added Jaime Cámara.
Through eight collection plants, one recovery plant, and the world's largest food-grade PET recycling plant located in Toluca, State of Mexico, PetStar recycles 3.1 billion bottles annually, equivalent to filling the Azteca Stadium 2.4 times, converting them into 50,000 tons of food-grade recycled resin, which is used by its shareholders to produce new containers with recycled content.
Thanks to these actions, today, PetStar recovers 66% of the packaging its shareholders place on the market, adding 30% to 100% recycled content to millions of containers. These actions reaffirm Coca-Cola's global commitment to the environment through its "World Without Waste" campaign, which aims to collect and recycle 100% of its packaging by 2030.
PetStar is part of the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry's sustainability commitment, with Arca Continental, Coca-Cola de México, Bepensa Bebidas, Corporación del Fuerte, Corporación Rica, Grupo Embotellador Nayar, and Embotelladora de Colima as its shareholders.
