Thanks to the efforts of Bepensa employees, with the support of the Yucatán Secretariat of Sustainable Development and the commitment of the community, we carried out sanitation work at the Yaxcabá cenote.
The work carried out in this cenote has resulted in the removal of more than 500 kg of trash and reforestation efforts to plant more than 25 trees.
Since 2015, Bepensa and the Bepensa Foundation have actively contributed to the conservation of cenotes on the Yucatán Peninsula.
With development and population growth, the pollution levels in these interconnected cenotes have grown to the point of becoming a red flag.
Pollution has two sources: On the one hand, saline water seepage in coastal areas, and on the other, pollution caused by human activities.
This is where the Bepensa Foundation has developed specific programs and actions under its environmental line of action for the preservation of the aquifer in the Yucatán Peninsula. For example, the conservation project it carries out in conjunction with Pronatura and the Coca-Cola Foundation for the Miguel Colorado Ecological Reserve in the state of Campeche, which houses an important water reserve for the Petenes region. It also promotes the recovery of green spaces through reforestation campaigns with communities, raising awareness that these actions help improve their quality of life.
By cleaning up cenotes, reforesting the surrounding areas, and raising awareness in communities about the importance of protecting them, we are helping to ensure there will be water for everyone in the future.
