Yesterday, May 5, Governor Mauricio Vila presented the project for the care and preservation of the Alacranes Reef National Park. The main objective is to reduce the effects of human activity and strengthen protection strategies in this area. Activities will be carried out to monitor, preserve, control, and eradicate invasive species. This will safeguard the largest coral reef in the entire Gulf of Mexico and take an important step in protecting the environment.
The Alacranes Reef is the largest coral reef in the Gulf of Mexico and the only one in Yucatán, as well as the largest Natural Protected Area in the state. Located more than 100 kilometers north of Progreso, it constitutes a historical, cultural, biological, and economic heritage. Its more than 3,300 square kilometers are home to enormous biological diversity, with more than 1,600 species, some of which are endangered or endemic.
For its protection and conservation, the Government of the State of Yucatán will provide three vessels equipped with radio and satellite communication systems, as well as six park rangers with a bachelor's degree in marine biology and postgraduate degrees in marine sciences, who will be housed at the field station donated by the Bepensa Foundation in 2019.
This field station consists of a rest, rest, and work area, with the necessary amenities to allow for research and actions to protect and conserve protected species in the Alacranes Reef.
In this way, by joining efforts between Companies, Society and Government, it is like Bepensa and the Bepensa Foundation reiterate their commitment to the environment, with actions that have a firm vision and that open up more opportunities for work and research for the conservation and protection of the natural resources of the communities where we operate.
